The Inspiration Behind the Cape
Our customer reached out to me with a very special request: a custom-made cape using a tartan fabric his church had designed and produced. Tartan patterns are deeply significant in Scottish culture—each one is unique and often carries its own story. This particular tartan wasn’t just a beautiful design, but a symbol of community, history, and identity for the church it represented.
The challenge? The fabric was lightweight, and not quite right for a cape on its own. But that’s where the magic of custom design comes in—we didn’t let that stop us from creating something truly special.
The Design Process
After discussing the project with the client, we decided to combine the tartan with a sturdy, classic navy fabric for the body of the cape. The design we landed on was a reversible navy cape with a hood, fully lined with the custom tartan fabric. This would not only create a striking contrast but also give the cape a rich texture and structure, while keeping it functional and stylish.
To add an extra touch of sophistication, we chose a cognac brown Italian leather toggle to fasten the cape. The quality of the leather and the craftsmanship of the toggle really elevate the piece, making it something that will last for years and be worn with pride.
A Touch of Versatility
What made this cape truly unique was the reversible design. I wanted to create something that could be worn in multiple ways, depending on the wearer’s mood or style. The tartan lining adds a pop of color and pattern when visible, while the navy exterior keeps the look classic and versatile.
